The first Earth Day celebration occurred on April 22, 1970. This new movement is intended to bring emphasis and increase awareness about environmental issues.
Gaylord Nelson, the founder of Earth Day, believed that the most important issue facing mankind was the fate of the living planet. Today, the Earth Day Network promotes environmental awareness in order to create a healthy environment and a peaceful, just, and sustainable world.
The objectives of the Earth Day Network encourage people to improve the environment. They want people to focus on the creation, instead of the creator. But this can cause people to worship the Creation and forget about the Creator. In the Bible, it says we should heal the land, and we can…But how? To learn more about this, read Second Chronicles, Chapter 7 and Romans chapter 1.
In the first chapter of his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul warned the people that those who changed the “truth of God into a lie” would instead worship and serve the creature more than the Creator. The result of this would be “vile affections” and a “depraved mind”.
The Bible tells us that God created the world and all that is in it, including human beings. (Genesis 1:1) We are told that He made us “in His own image”. (Genesis 1:27) This means that we are special to Him and have a unique purpose in His plan.
Sadly, many people today do not believe that God exists. They think that we are just another animal and that the earth does not belong to us. They believe that we can do whatever we want to the environment without consequences. This is a dangerous lie.
The time is coming when the Lord will judge the world based on how we have treated His creation. (2 Peter 3:10-12) We need to be ready for that day. We need to repent of our sins and turn to Jesus Christ for forgiveness. He is the only one who can save us from God’s wrath. (John 3:16-17)
So what can we do? First, we need to repent of our sinful ways and turn back to God. Second, we need to start taking care of the earth and its resources. This means being good stewards of His creation. We can do this by using His resources wisely and not wasting them. Third, we need to work to heal the earth and its people. We can do this by spreading the gospel and sharing the love of Christ with others. Let’s work together to rejoice in our dominion over the earth and to be good stewards of His creation.
